“I don’t know what that means.” He stubbornly refused the summons, because that’s what it was.

“Come here, my darling,” René said, his voice hoarse. “Do not torture me by making me spend one more second without you in my arms.”

“You are torturing me now,” Gabe cried out in a low voice and spun around to face the other man. “It was hard enough to leave the last time. Are you trying to kill me? To ruin me?” He closed his eyes, blocking out René’s stricken look, and ran a hand over his face. “I can’t do this, René.” His voice cracked and he cleared his throat, looking down at the floor. “I can’t be here, and fuck you, and then walk away again.” He blew out a breath and shoved his hands in his pockets. “Don’t ask me, don’t.” He finally looked back at René and was almost undone by the naked longing on his face. As it was, Gabe couldn’t speak.

“Is it my turn now?” René said, his voice breaking. “I must speak. I love you, Gabriel. I would do anything for more time with you.” He looked down at the glass he clutched in his hand as if he’d forgotten it and then he raised it to his lips and drank the entire glass. When he was done he turned and violently threw it against the wall, and Gabe jerked as if he’d been hit. When René turned back to him he was angry.

“Yes, I admit I manipulated the situation to get you back here. I need you, mon ange.” He gestured wildly about. “This war, this time, all is uncertainty. Can you blame me for wanting some happiness? With you?”
